You can use it for a variety of things! I used it when holding the zipper in place for my Jamie Dress. It's also great for "pinning" down that first strip of a string quilt block.

Shopping for guys is hard. I usually end up in the tool or electronics section. But, a good pocket knife is always a favorite, or a multi-tool (like a nice Leatherman).
