Overall, we are counting on a lot of saving, the government tax credit and a grant from my job to pay for this endeavor. As you may know, international adoptions generally range from $30,000 to $40,000. Domestic adoptions can cost nearly as much. Because our extra finances go to our local church and community projects we are involved with, I've been mulling over some creative fundraising ideas that I thought I'd enjoy.
I had this crazy idea the other day that I could get together with some friends and raid my fabric stash for cute, novelty fabric prints. I'd teach my friends how to transform them into thousands (yes, really!) of fabric-covered button earrings.
The idea is not to open an Etsy shop, but just to take individual orders for a time (maybe a few months) and sell them in bulk to brick-and-mortar craft shops or to others hoping to run their own fundraiser.
So, the button covers, earring backs and posts have been ordered! And if you are still reading this crazy rant, I'd like to ask for your help.
I'm looking for donations of:
- Fabric scraps
- Small prints, polka dots, patterns... anything that would look cute as a 1/2-inch covered button. If you have scraps that are too small to quilt with, or you're just sick of looking at them, please consider sending them to me for my buttons project! Medium-weight cotton or cotton-linen quilting fabrics are highly desirable, but I can use thinner fabrics as long as I also have some . . .
- Interfacing scraps
- Anything at least 1" wide will work, and I'll attach this to thinner fabrics
- Quilt Batting Scraps
- Anything at least 2" wide, and I'll cut this up to package the earrings for mail orders
I'm planning on selling these button earrings to anyone I know who'd like to buy them. Since you are all a crafty bunch, I thought I might put together some button earring kits to sell if there is interest. And as I mentioned earlier, I'll also offer a discounted wholesale rate to craft stores, supplies stores or churches/individuals interested in fundraising this way. So if this is you or you have contacts, I'd love to know that.
Thanks to some friends who've encouraged me that this idea could really work. More details and ordering info will be available in the next month or so. So excited to start making these cuties!

what a nice idea. I of course have some fabric and batting pieces to share.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, congratulations on starting the adoption process! We just got our foster family application last week, but haven't started filling it out yet.
ReplyDeleteI don't have much in the way of scraps since I am a new sewist, but I'll see what I have. Also, I work for my LQS so once you've gotten some put together you might want to contact my boss and see if she'd be interested in carrying them in the store.
Shoot me an email when you get the chance and hopefully I can help in some way. :)
Wow, how great that your journey is starting! I have lots of small scraps and batting scraps I would be happy to send on, just give me your address and I'll pop in the post to you!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS!!!! How very exciting! Look forward to watching the details unfold!
ReplyDeleteAny chance you'll be offering just the buttons, not as earrings, to be used for sewing projects?
Very best wishes as you move ahead!!!
If you have some that end up on the larger size.. they would make cute lapel pins and manly prints would be cute tie tacks or cuff links too!
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I have a bunch of scraps I could send you! Congrats and GOOD LUCK on your adoption process!
ReplyDeleteSign me up! I've got some fabric scraps and interfacing scraps I can send to you.
ReplyDeleteI have some I can send you too. :) Congrats on the adoption process. xo
ReplyDeleteI'd gladly send some scraps and possibly some interfacing if I can find it... :)
ReplyDeleteYAY on the adoption process getting underway! I'm not a quilter, but let me know if there's any other way I can help. :)
ReplyDeleteKeep up with me, Ted, and our Fab Four at http://four-by-two.blogspot.com.
Congratulations! I'd love to help, for sure I have interfacing scraps, and I'll dig through my fabric scraps as well. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI can send you scraps! :-)
ReplyDeleteCount me in. I've got tons of cute little scraps and would love to send some. Riel
ReplyDeleteI can send you all three! Just shoot me an email with your details! Congrats and good luck in your endeavor!
ReplyDeletePlease send me your mailing address as I would love to help. Can I refer this to my guild newsletter? Either a link to your blog or your address - your preference please.
ReplyDeleteSend me information! I'd love to carry the buttons in our scrapbook store. Our ladies love fun jewelry and a good cause and this sounds like both! Blessings on your adoption!
