Kona solids quilt top finished and a crafty tour of D.C.

Finished my Kona charm pack quilt top! Among all of the possibilities, I stuck with the diamonds layout here, mostly to get it in one solid sheet and off the dining room floor.

What is your favorite quilting style lately? Free motion, straight lines, hand stitching? I'm taking suggestions!

I also wanted to show off some of the cute crafty stores I visited last month in Alexandria, Virginia. The first is Fibre Space. My husband liked the name, and I like the "shop dog" who wandered around.

The other was Paper Source, a scrapbooking and wedding stationery store that literally went on and on. I didn't buy anything here, but oddly enough, my husband did?

Too bad I didn't stumble into an awesome quilt shop, but these were pretty special!

D.C. is fun with friends! (Jonah, Sara, me, Matt, Abe.)

  1. Looks like a good trip. I loved DC when I visited there a couple of years ago!

No picture of the "shop dog"? And what did your husband buy at Fibre Space? I'm curious. My husband would have waited outside ;)

  2. Sorry - should have paid more attention...what did your husband buy at the paper shop? (My husband would have waited outside of that one too)

  6. I love your quilt! It's so funny, I was reading the "City Quilts" book recently, and before that I never would have said I would make a quilt entirely in solids, but seeing those quilts and now seeing yours, I think it's definitely something I need to do. I can't even picture your quilt with a print, it's so awesome! I have been doing wavy lined quilting only vertically (I am lazy on the actual quilting step, I really don't care for it).

  7. Beautiful quilt! I too use the design floor a lot, it does get you moving sometimes!

  8. Oh, I have a similar challenge with my Guild. Mine is also on the floor with express orders not to step on it.... how is it that I find my little pieces all over the place in the morning????? Your quilt is beautiful. I love the mid grey solid and your use of all the colors in the geometric patterns. I showed it to my daughter (12) and she said, "you should have done THAT!". I'm guessing she's not in sync with what I'm doing, perhaps explaining all the little rearranged pieces in the morning. Cant's wait to see how is all comes together!

  9. I love your Kona solids quilt, it's beautiful!
I think it would look great with straight line quilting, or maybe even hand stitching (if you have alot of time!!).

  11. I've been playing around with some free-motion designs, and this is my current favorite: http://sewinginthewendycity.blogspot.com/2011/04/80s-called.html
It's lots of fun, and it washes up amazing! But it takes a ton of thread. The quilt is finished up now, and I estimate that I put 1500 yards of thread into the quilting.

  12. I love it! I'm really into straight line sewing close together across the top lately, but for your quilt, I might go with a loose free motion design to complement the very straight lines of the diamonds!

  14. I love the quilt top! Great colors, and very crisp, if you know what I mean.

I'm thinking I'm going to quilt my pips in diamonds, and I think that would look great on yours too...
